HOWARD, DAVIS : Unknown Newspaper, 1978, 50th Anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Alton Howard. Mrs. Robert (Alora) Davis and Alton Jay Howard daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alton Howard hosted the occasion of the celebration of their parents golden wedding anniversary this past Sunday Oct. 29th. Alton and the former Viola Anthony were united in marriage on Oct. 27, 1928 at the Methodist parsonage which at that time was located on High Street at the present location of the First National Drive-in-Bank. Viola is the daughter of Ethel and Harry E. Anthony, of South Haven, both deceased. Alton is the son of the late O.J. Howard a well known veterinarian and Lena Howard 94 years old, who has been a resident of Watervliet for 70 years. Alton is a registered professional engineer and land surveyor in MI and Georgia and has practiced his profession in this vicinity 49 years as construction superintendent of the Austin Co. of Chicago. He also spent 4 years serving in the U. S. Army during WWII as a combat engineer with the Pacific Theater. They have 3 grandsons Keith, Kenny and Kevin Davis.

McNEES: 50th Anniversary, Unknown newspaper, 1980, Mr. & Mrs. Carl McNees were honored at a surprise open house June 22, 1980 at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Lucius (Carol) King of Watervliet, also hosting the open house was the couples son and daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Donald McNees of Hartford, MI. Carl McNees and the former Florence Shingledecker were married June 21, 1930 in South Bend, Ind and have lived in this area all their lives.

Acton, Robert Franklin, son of Eva and Orry Acton was born on Aug. 16, 1894 in Benton Harbor, MI. He attended Fish Corners School in Covert, MI where he graduated form the 8th grade. He later attended school in Benton Harbor, Mi. In 1912, he married Elizabeth Weston of Hartford, MI. Out of this union two son's were born , Donald and Robert Jr. Donald passed away at age 3. Robert was employed by J. B. Toland Chevrolet as a mechanic and C & O RR in New Buffalo. They later moved to Long Beach, CA. where Elizabeth passed away. Robert married his second wife Leah, Aug. 21, 1953. She survives him in Caryville, Florida where they have lived the past 21 years. Son Robert preceded him in death in Downey, CA. in 1974. Arnold, Leroy, 75, of Watervliet died April 21 in Bry Fern Nursing home. Mr. Arnold was born Feb. 24, 1901 in Hart, MI and was retired from Watervliet Paper Co. Surviving are his widow, Ann; 2 daughters, Mrs. Hershell (Norma) Harris and Mrs. Ray (Noreen) Zuchowski, both of Coloma and a brother Myrl of Claremont, Fla. Newspaper, 1976

Bachman, Harold H., 90, of Coloma died Thursday, Feb. 17, at Dowagiac Nursing home. He was a member of the Coloma Methodist Church. Burial was in Coloma Cemetery. He was a member of the Coloma Masonic Lodge 162. He was a member of the Coloma Order of the Eastern Star No. 307 and a Past Patron of the chapter, a member of the Low 12 Club of Berrien County, a 32 degree Mason, Valley of Grand Rapids and a Shriner, Saladin Temple, Grand Rapids. Baldwin, Laura Harper, 87, expired July 27, 1979. She was born in Watervliet on May 23, 1892, the daughter of James and Frances Harper. She spent her entire life in this community. She was a long time and valued employee of the Watervliet Paper Company as advertising Service Clerk beginning her duties on Sept. 15, 1919 and retiring on June 29, 1962. The last seven years with her son's Henry and Wilbur (Red) who preceded her in death in 1973. Leverton, Helen, 59, well known local resident died Fri. morning in St. Edwards Mercy Medical Center, Arkansas following a long illness. On Aug. 12 of last year she was flown to Ark. to reside alternately with her daughters Carol and Nancy. She was born in Watervliet on June 27, 1918, the daughter of Jerome and Ethle Pitcher. She graduated from Watervliet High School and on Sept. 25, 1938 was united in marriage to Wilbur Leverton in the home of his parents Harry and Caroline Leverton. Her husband was associated in business with his father and his brother Henry in the J. H. Leverton & Son's grocery on Main St. She was a member of the Literary Guild for thirty years and served the organization in many capacities, including that of president. At one time she was chairperson of the Loan Closet and stored and maintained the equipment in her spacious home. As a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and the Watervliet Fire Belles, she was an active participant in their work. She was employed by the City of Watervliet for 8 years until ill health forced her resignation as assistant, deputy clerk. Survivors include 2 daughters Mrs. William (Carol) Gertz and Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Olson of Ft. Smith, Ark. Brother and sisters: Jerome (Bud) Pitcher, Inman, S. Swinford, Mabel: Funeral Services for Mabel Swinford, 79, formerly of Watervliet, were held Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Plymouth Congregational Church. Mrs. Swinford died Friday, Oct. 10 at Doctor's Hospital, San Leandro, CA. She was born Sept. 4, 1896 in Riverdale, Ill to Mr. & Mrs. Albert Pierce. Her husband Roy, preceded her in death in 1961. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Ladies Aid, Mothers of WW II American Legion Auxilary, the Bridge Club and the Sewing Club. She is survived by a son, Dale of San Leandro, and a daughter. Mrs. Shirley Yeske, Benton Harbor, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, 2 son's Robert and Dwayne preceded her in death. Tallis, Dolores Camp, 76, died May 14, 1985 at Beverly Manor, Az. She was born in Watervliet and moved to Sun City in 1973 from Wisconsin. She was a housewife and a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Henry I. Tallis of Sun City, AZ; son Craig Tallis, San Diego, CA., seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Newspaper, 1985

Tingue, John, 60, 0f Watervliet, MI died at his home Thursday of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Tingue was born May 19, 1921 in Watervliet. Survivors include his wife Marian (Rouse) Tingue, one son Gary of Watervliet, four brothers Robert Selter, of Watervliet, Dale Selter of Stevensville, Gordon Selter of Rosebud, TX and Floyd Selter of Detroit and four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Hoadley of Watervliet, Mrs. Jack (Maxine) Salverson of Hartford, and Mrs. Orville (Eve) Brooks of Bald Knob, Ark. Watkins, Mrs. Viola R., 78, of Hartford, MI died Thursday July 14, 1977 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Madeline Cowgill, Watervliet. Mrs. Watkins was born Feb. 7, 1899 in Bangor. Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. Ben (Madeline)Cowgill, Watervliet, Mrs. Maurice (Virginia) VanDeWiele, Hartford and Mrs. Alfred (Donna) Swetay, Clearwater, Fla., 6 son's, Richard and Otto both of Bangor, Kenneth, Lacota, Edward, Jack and Larry, all of Hartford; 33 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren; 4 brothers Warren Disbrow, Lansing, Ill., Merwin and Donald Disbrow both of Hartford. Wells, Maurice, 85, of Fremont, MI formerly of Eau Claire died Oct. 24 in Fremont. He was born Nov. 13, 1893 in Pipestone township, . He served on the Pipestone Township Road Commission and as a Justice of the peace for several years. Survivors include 2 daughters Mrs. norman (Ethel) Umpstead of Germany and Mrs. James (LaVerne) Muckey of Hesperia, MI., 7 grandchildren and 5 great granddaughters. Welty, Mary, of Hartford, died Tuesday. Mrs. Welty was born March 24, 1931 in Watervliet. She was a member of the Hartford Federated Church. Survivors in clude her husband, Basil, one son Bruce of St. Joseph, two daughtters; Mrs. Charles (Celeste) Tuttle of Morganton, NC and Starla Welty at home, three grandchildren,her father, Mervin Disbrow of Hartford, two sisters; Mrs. Harold (Patty) Hunt of Union City, Mi. and Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Burton of Galesburg and one brother Harold Disbrow of Washington. Winch, Mark Allen, formerly of Watervliet was killed when he was hit by a car while hitchhiking near Opelousas, LA early Thursday Morning Dec. 24. Newspaper (date has been cut but looks like 1981.)

Woodworth, Clara Yund, 99, died Monday at Berrien General Hospital. She was born Nov. 22, 1885 in Hisperia, Michigan. She was a lifelong resident of Watervliet. A former member of the Free Methodist Church of Watervliet and a member of the World War Mothers. At the age of 90 she studied and received her high school diploma and at 94 she wrote her life history. Survivors include a son Kenneth of Benton Harbor, two daughters, Mrs. Florine Rowe of Watervliet, and Mrs. Lowell (Clarabell) Peters of Delton, MI 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren two stepsons and two stepdaughters. She was preceded in death by two husbands, William Yund in 1954 and Ernest Woodworth in 1965 and two son's Glen in 1979 and Clifford in 1983. Newspaper, date unknow (abt. 1983-1985)


WENDZEL: New 1978 Watervliet Record, L. Wendzel WHS Outstanding, Lois Wendzel and Stephen Tatter were named the Outstanding Girl and Boy at the 89th commencement exercises of Watervliet High School Friday evening. Lois was president of her senior class, winner of the Arion Award as the most outstanding vocal and band student, member of the National Honor Society, active inthe Future Farmers and a member of the girls varsity basketball, volleyball and softball teams. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Wendzel and plans to attend Concordia.

WENDZEL: Watervliet Record, 1975, MISS WATERVLIET 1975, Miss Debra Wendzel was crowned Miss Watervliet of 1975 before a capacity crowd Tuesday night at the Watervliet High School Auditorium. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth I. Wendzel. First runner up was Teresa Roth, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Roth, secod runner up was Janice Sonnenberg, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Sonnenberg. Chosen Miss Congeniality was Karen Lutz daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Sempert
